What rekeying is

Rekeying changes the internal configuration of a lock so that the key that used to operate it no longer will, and a new key does. The lock body, handle and finish stay on the door — only the internal pinning and the keys change.

Rekeying depends on the lock. Most standard residential cylinders can be rekeyed, but some hardware is worn, damaged, proprietary or simply not designed for it. We check the hardware on site and tell you plainly whether rekeying is the right option or whether replacement makes more sense.

Granville Locks also works with specialty cylinders, including mortise cylinders, Mul-T-Lock systems and European-style cylinders. Depending on the hardware, we can rekey an existing cylinder or replace it with a compatible cylinder when rekeying is not the best option. Mul-T-Lock cylinders can be rekeyed or replaced where compatible with the existing hardware.

When homeowners ask for a rekey

Moving into a new home or unit, where you have no way of knowing how many copies of the key are out there.

Lost or stolen keys, or keys that were never returned by a former tenant, contractor, housekeeper or roommate.

Wanting several doors — front, back, garage side door — to work on a single key, where the hardware allows it.

What to expect from Granville Locks

We look at the existing hardware first, confirm what can be rekeyed, and explain the options and cost before starting. Work is normally done on site in a single visit, and you get the new keys in hand along with the old ones deactivated.

We handle house, condo and apartment rekeys — standard residential locks as well as mortise, Mul-T-Lock and European-style cylinders — and can arrange lock cylinder replacement where that suits the door better. We serve homes across Vancouver, Burnaby, the North Shore, the Tri-Cities and out to Surrey.
